Women broke the gender barrier at the nation’s last all-male, state-supported military school last week when 30 female cadets entered the austere barracks of the Virginia Military Institute. It took a six-year legal struggle and a Supreme Court ruling that a taxpayer-financed school must accept women to get them there. But V. I responded well, moving swiftly to insure that female cadets were treated fairly. I’s enlightened attitude could serve as a model for the military as a whole. Like their male first-year classmates, the women received buzz cuts and wore drill uniforms. A few new regulations entered V. Lipstick, jewelry and dating upperclassmen are not allowed.

VMI offers one of the most challenging first-year experiences of any college in the United States, and it starts with the Rat Line. Because they may be stopped and tested by upper-class cadets during certain hours each day, they must be meticulous in daily personal grooming and in keeping their shoes shined and uniforms spotless. They must also be ready to recite school songs, yells, and other information — and drop for pushups if they fail.
The Rat Line is designed to instill and reinforce character traits that will serve a cadet well during his or her cadet years and in life after VMI. Success in the Rat Line requires concentration, attention to detail, a sense of humor, resolve, and self-discipline. It starts with an intense week of workouts — several a day. Later, as an upper-class cadet, you will be required to take PE and participate in physical training at least twice every week.
Time management will be your key to survival because every hour of every academic day is scheduled. Much is shared among members of a class — the boredom of guard duty and penalty tours, intense preparation for parades and inspections, late-night study sessions, downtime in barracks. Friendships resulting from this partnership often last a lifetime. Graduating cadets say it over and over again.

Female cadets women were allowed admittance in sometimes bring female dates, as well as male, to the Ball; and cadets of both sexes sometimes choose to bring a sibling, parent, or grandparent as their date. The majority of male cadets, however, attend this celebration with a female date. Last month, a male cadet from the Class of made VMI history by bringing his boyfriend.

When I was 16 and thinking about going to college, my parents drove me to Lexington to visit Virginia Military Institute, where my father and several uncles had gone. I took one look at those barren barracks, and I could see why. The quadrangle looked like a prison yard. Everything was gray and utilitarian. I could see it wasn’t for me. My father was terribly disappointed, but I don’t think he was much surprised.
He had had the usual love-hate relationship with VMI, having been shipped with his whole class – in , I believe – because no one would tell the superintendent which classmates had stolen the ice cream from his back porch. When no third classman would confess, the superintendent sent the whole class home. But time eased my father’s anger. By , when I walked with him through the quadrangle, he fondly recalled his two years there.
My father was from Smithfield, and people there think VMI hung the moon. Southsiders swear by the discipline that VMI instills.

Berry, a graduate of VMI and a retired Richmond utility executive, said admissions information will be sent immediately to about 80 young women who have inquired about enrolling. The VMI experience for women will be much the same as it has been for men, school officials promised.
First-year cadets live in spartan barracks that offer little privacy, rise before the sun, observe rigid timetables and march single-file everywhere they go on campus. The federal military schools at Annapolis, West Point and Colorado Springs admitted women 20 years ago. Because there were so many variables – including how much money the state would seek if it were willing to sell the campus to a private group – the alumni asked the board to give them another year to negotiate with the state.
The board rejected that motion. Trustee Anita K. Blair, an Arlington, Va. Janet D. Howell, D-Fairfax, Va. The journalists of The Spokesman-Review are a part of the community.
